{"id":2170,"date":"2018-01-19T19:00:26","date_gmt":"2018-01-20T01:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/minorcoursecorrection.com\/?p=2170"},"modified":"2026-05-20T14:17:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T14:17:21","slug":"leave-no-trace-plan-ahead-and-prepare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jphikes.com\/index.php\/2018\/01\/19\/leave-no-trace-plan-ahead-and-prepare\/","title":{"rendered":"Leave No Trace &#8211; Plan Ahead and Prepare"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you&#8217;ll visit.<\/li>\n<li>Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies.<\/li>\n<li>Schedule your trip to avoid times of high use.<\/li>\n<li>Visit in small groups when possible.<\/li>\n<li>Repackage food to minimize waste.<\/li>\n<li>Use a map and compass to eliminate the use of marking paint, rock cairns or flagging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I have said before, one does not plan to hike the PCT.\u00a0 One can only prepare.\u00a0 I have spent the past three years researching, studying and reading about this trail.\u00a0 I believe I have the correct tools for the hike.<\/p>\n<p>The first and immediate concern is staying up-to-date with the latest regulations.\u00a0 I am not a big fan of going stove-less.\u00a0 I nice hot cup of coffee in the morning is a luxury I&#8217;m willing to carry.\u00a0 However, if a section is closed from any fire source, including my tiny three-ounce stove, I will follow those regulations.\u00a0 I am depending upon the PCTA to keep me informed.<\/p>\n<p>My Guthooks app is great.\u00a0 It provides important information like where I can find a privy instead of digging a cat hole.\u00a0 It provides more possible camping locations than the paper maps I am also taking.\u00a0 I will, to the best of my ability, stick to places where people have already camped to reduce any damage I do to the environment.<\/p>\n<p>I do have a bit of concern when it comes to the principle that I should repackage food to minimize waste.\u00a0 I recognize that by removing the wrappers from all my Clif Bars I will significantly reduce the chance that part of the wrapper will go flying in the wind, I&#8217;m still increasing the amount of waste by using zip lock bags instead of keeping the bar in its original wrapper.<\/p>\n<p>I know that I don&#8217;t know everything, but I know where to look.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you&#8217;ll visit.
